Case Study: How LGH Helped LucentHD Lift Canucks’ Arena Display

Before any body checks or cross-checks in the new hockey season could start, the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks had something else vital to check: the system that hangs their center-ice scoreboard.

In this case study, we explore how LGH’s expert rigging solutions helped LucentHD navigate the task of lifting the scoreboard display structure at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC. The team at LucentHD initially weighed and installed the structure in 2023 with help from LGH. With ice-thin margins for error, they turned once again to LGH for lift plan and rigging assistance.

Introduction

LucentHD is a renowned engineering design and installation firm. Their portfolio spans over 200 major sports projects across the U.S. and Canada. They faced a true test of their expertise when tasked with lifting a structure as large and heavy as the scoreboard display. Due to limitations of the arena’s hoist system, the structure itself needed to maintain a weight of 60,000 lbs or less. Exceeding this limit could result in major structural damage, delays, or even catastrophic failure.

The initial display installation in 2023 was fraught with challenges. LucentHD needed to weigh the structure while it remained fully suspended in mid-air. The electrical systems in the arena also had to remain active. The ice rink sat underneath the structure. Any imbalance or lack of proper support could have resulted in damage to the arena, the hoist system, or the ice rink below.

With a small margin for error, LucentHD required precise, reliable equipment to weigh and support the structure accurately. They had to do this without causing any shifts or imbalances. Moreover, the space overhead was tight and the structure needed to remain perfectly level throughout the process.

THE SOLUTION

LucentHD turned to LGH for a custom rigging solution. Inside Rental Rep Mark Murphy worked closely with them to devise a detailed rigging plan. This plan would allow the team to weigh and support the entire structure safely.

Mark ultimately recommended 55,000-lbs capacity Digital Load Links, round slings, and shackles. These components were chosen not only for their strength and precision but also for their ability to maintain stability while suspended. The Digital Load Links analyzed the weight of the structure. These digital gauges measure the strain of materials subjected to traction stress. Their internal sensor generates an electrical signal that is proportional to the load. This signal is processed by a micro-processor analyzer and then displayed on a built-in LCD display. This allows you to wirelessly measure the weight of the load safely from a distance. With Mark’s guidance and LGH’s top-tier rigging equipment, LucentHD was able to successfully install the display. In September 2024, LucentHD was tasked again with lifting the display so that maintenance could be performed on the hoist system. Their team knew they could trust LGH to get them the lifting gear they needed. Round slings and shackles were provided to lift the structure (pictured below).

THE RESULT

Thanks to LGH’s professional and prompt rigging solutions, LucentHD successfully lifted the scoreboard display. They supported the structure safely, avoiding any damage to the arena or the ice rink below. Rogers Arena was then able to complete the maintenance of their hoist system.

LucentHD kept the project on schedule and on budget, a noteworthy feat. With LGH’s help, the Canucks’ arena was prepped and ready in time for puck drop on opening night. The LucentHD team helped ensure the rink and its surrounding infrastructure were secure for both players and fans alike.

More recently, LucentHD completed a scoreboard installation in Perth, Australia. This project was similar in nature to the Rogers Arena display project. Because of their experience in Vancouver, the team was also successful in the Perth display installation.

CONCLUSION

This collaboration exemplifies LGH’s commitment to providing tailored, expert rigging solutions. LucentHD’s owner, Jared Anderson, praised LGH for the professionalism, reliability, and ability to tackle such a complex task with ease. As LucentHD continues to take on large-scale AV installations and projects across North America, they know they can rely on LGH for safe, effective rigging solutions. This project also underscored LGH’s leadership in the rigging industry, showcasing the ability to deliver both precision and peace of mind to customers.
