Case Study: J. Haugh Cranes’ Strategic Use of LGH Hydraulic Gantry
Navigating Tight Spaces: J. Haugh Cranes Relies on LGH for Successful Refrigeration Unit Installation
J. Haugh Cranes has been a cornerstone of the crane and rigging industry in the New Jersey tri-state area since 1998. Founded by John Haugh Sr., the family-run company is renowned for its state-of-the-art equipment, experienced operators, and reputation for dependability. John Haugh Jr., now president of J. Haugh Cranes, continues to uphold these values, ensuring the safety and excellence of every single project. When Haugh was recently tasked with installing refrigeration units into a tight space, he quickly realized they would need a some specialized assistance.
The Challenge
The project undertaken by J. Haugh Cranes involved lifting and positioning four refrigeration units in Newark, New Jersey. The units, two weighing 16,000 pounds each and two at 8,000 pounds each, needed to be installed near Newark Airport. This posed several challenges:
1. Time Constraints:
The client was under a tight deadline, necessitating quick and efficient placement of the units.
2. Permitting Issues:
Due to the proximity to Newark Airport, acquiring an FAA permit in time was a challenge.
3. Space Limitations:
The installation area was extremely narrow, making it difficult to maneuver and set up large cranes.
4. Reach Requirements:
The units needed to be moved 225 feet, but a larger crane could only move them part of the way.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, Haugh utilized their GMK 3060, a 65-ton crane, to lift the refrigeration units as close as possible. However, the final placement required a more precise and versatile solution. This is where LGH’s hydraulic gantries came into play.
Working closely with LGH representative Pete Fortunes, Haugh was able to secure the necessary equipment promptly. Pete has been their go-to contact for several years. Having an established relationship with a trusted partner streamlined the entire process. Haugh also noted that the local availability of the gantries and tracks allowed the project to start even sooner than anticipated.
The GMK 3060 crane initially positioned the units. The hydraulic gantries then took over, moving the units the remaining 120 feet into their exact locations. The gantries’ precision and the track system’s reliability were critical in navigating this tight space and meeting the project’s strict deadlines.
Results
Thanks to the efficiency and reliability of the hydraulic gantries provided by LGH, the team completed the project ahead of schedule and under budget. The seamless collaboration between J. Haugh Cranes and LGH ensured that all equipment was up to the task, reflecting both companies’ commitment to safety and excellence.
Conclusion
This project highlights the importance of having reliable partners and access to specialized equipment in the crane and rigging industry. For J. Haugh Cranes, working with LGH is a reflection of their own commitment to safety and efficiency. The success of this project underscores the necessity of knowledgable partners and accessibility to gear when tackling challenging jobs.
John Haugh Jr. emphasized the value of this partnership:
“We enjoy working with LGH. You guys are always our first call whenever we need something that’s not in our inventory. Our needs range from small to large equipment, and you seem to have most of our needs in stock, which is always great.”
By maintaining strong relationships and providing top-notch equipment, LGH continues to support companies like J. Haugh Cranes in delivering outstanding service and upholding their reputation in the industry.
