Critical Refinery Cooling Tower Lift with BMWC Constructors and LGH

Modular Spreader Beam System Enables Safe, Efficient Lift Inside Active Refinery

Overview

BMWC Constructors, Inc. partnered with LGH to complete a critical lift inside an active refinery safely, efficiently, and without disrupting operations. Using LGH’s modular spreader beam system and engineered lift planning support, BMWC successfully set two 15’ x 52’ cooling tower unit sections within a tight schedule and confined space.

The Challenge:

BMWC was tasked with setting two massive cooling tower unit sections while the refinery remained fully operational. The job required precise coordination of a 550-ton crane, engineered lift plans for approval, and compliance with strict site preparation and soil compaction requirements — all under significant time constraints.

The LGH Solution:

LGH provided technical expertise and developed the correct rigging configuration using modular spreader beams and certified rigging components. The LGH team supplied the structural engineer with equipment data, capacities, and safety certifications to streamline calculations and approvals.

By designing a lift plan that allowed the same rigging equipment to be used for both lifts, LGH helped BMWC minimize equipment costs and setup time. The modular design of the spreader beams enabled fast reconfiguration between lifts. This allowed both operations to be completed within two days.

The Outcome:

The entire project was completed within one week, with the critical lifts executed safely over a single weekend — on time and under budget. The job was completed with zero injuries or incidents.

“Working with LGH is always a positive experience,” said John Manta, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at BMWC. “From top to bottom, every individual I’ve worked with at LGH has been 100% supportive. Tony Fiscelli and his team clearly understand what customer service means, and they demonstrate it every day.”
