LGH was honored to partner with RoboNation to provide equipment to lower student subs into the water for the 25th annual RoboSub competition at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center natatorium this year.

RoboNation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hands-on educational experiences that empower students to find solutions to global challenges. RoboSub, an international student robotic submarine building competition, is a part of their initiative.

RoboSub was established in 1998 to simultaneously challenge students and advance the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) field. Each year, the competition unites teams worldwide to design and build robotic submarines, otherwise known as AUVs.

The event, which spanned six days from July 27 – August 2, had the AUVs perform six tasks on four courses. The behaviors demonstrated by student AUVs during the competition mimic real-world systems currently deployed across the globe for underwater exploration, seafloor mapping, and sonar localization purposes.

The equipment LGH provided was utilized as a non-permanent solution for lowering the fully autonomous subs into the practice pools and onto the competition course.

LGH Northeast Regional Manager Bill Corne, who was centrally involved in the sponsorship, wrote, “Thanks to RoboNation for letting us be a part of this, and for all their organization does to support and foster education and engineering ingenuity.”

Other key members from LGH involved in the sponsorship coordination included Tommy Purdum, Regional Rental Representative, and Dan Sierzega, Rental Desk Support Specialist.

Equipment supplied by LGH included  2 mobile floor crane, an electric winch, wire rope, and a 1T hand chain hoist.
